National Dance Week 2008 will be held nation-wide in the U.S. April 25 through May 4 this year. In 1981, a coalition of dance-related organizations began a grass-roots movement to encourage the growth of dance in America. The group wanted to organize an event to "raise the public consciousness to the values, importance and contributions of dance to our daily lives and culture." The movement has become National Dance week and is celebrated with a vast assortment of events and activities around the country. The diverse events are only limited by the creative abilities of those who participate in them. Visit the National Dance week website for events in your area.
The Bay Area National Dance Week celebration (BANDW) is celebrating its 10th anniversary with more than 300 events including the Bay Area Dance Awards, performance previews by Bay Area dance companies, free classes, demonstrations and workshops. All events are free and open to the public and cater to all ages and levels of experience. BANDW also features one of the most diverse rosters of dance forms including ballet, modern, Argentine tango, classical Indian, jazz, hip hop, traditional hula, fire dance, Samba, Chinese classical, belly dance, aerial dance, West African and contact improvisation. Visit the BANDW website at www.bacndw.org for daily schedules.
