Michael Jackson’s legacy will no doubt be felt in many fields now associated with music today like video production, but his impact on popular social dance is unmistakable. His legacy may very well be on the local dance floor as much as any place else. The signature moves he created are still replicated by artists today and have become part of popular lexicon. Moonwalking no longer refers only to NASA space walks.
Rumors of a Thriller musical on Broadway have been gaining momentum in recent months and just last May, students at the College of William & Mary broke the Guinness Book of World Record’s record for the largest Thriller dance. Even Filipino inmates gained world-wide attention with a group Thriller dance in their exercise yard. It's received 24 million hits to date on YouTube and after hearing the news of Jackson's death, 1,500 prisoners gathered in the yard to perform.
When the Jabbawockeez crew danced to a remix of PYT on the first season of merica’s Best Dance Crew, they commented on what it was like to try and replicate Jackson's moves, “You know what’s dope about Michael? It’s the conviction of his movement.”
