Established in 1996 as a non-profit organization, Marin Dance Theatre (MDT) has quickly become an internationally recognized school for classical ballet and contemporary dance education. Our innovative training programs are based on techniques developed over the last thirty years by founding Artistic Director Margaret Swarthout, School Director Lynn Cox and former associate Melinda Darlington Bach, and serve to provide children ages 3-19 with an exceptional dance instruction in a nurturing environment.
MDT is able to offer a great deal of personal, one-on-one attention to students who show exceptional interest in their dance training and wish to enroll in MDT’s career bound program. This kind of one-on-one, private lesson experience is seldom offered at large ballet schools in America and has resulted in 14 career-bound students being accepted to ballet companies across the U.S. in the past 11 years. Ten of MDT’s career-bound students have attained finalist levels in the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA). If a dancer has the passion, desire and work ethic to perform in a professional dance company, Marin Dance Theatre can take them there. If a dancer wishes to enroll in a university to study dance, MDT can also provide the proper resources to guide them to successfully make the transition.
There is no better after-school environment than Marin Dance Theatre, located on the beautiful St. Vincent’s Campus. For children ages 3-6 years, classes include Introduction to Ballet, Pre Ballet and Elementary classes. As young dancers progress, they can enroll in the Young Dancer Division which prepares them for the Junior Division and eventually the Senior Division Levels. The MDT dance education center is located in one of Northern California’s most spectacular pastoral settings, a 160-year old Spanish-style mission located twenty minutes north of San Francisco, in the town of San Rafael.
