Profile
Carmen Carnes Dance Ensemble is an up-and-coming dance company based in San Francisco that creates experimental contemporary dance. CCDE works with the mediums of movement, music, and visual art to create stirring performance/meditations. They strive to connect with a broad audience by presenting evocative and finely-crafted dances that highlight the impermanence of life, interconnection with technology and nature, and the suffering, joy and wonder that is our shared existence. Informed by traditional arts, artistic director and choreographer Carmen Carnes has created her own unique contemporary language through extensive study and investigation. Carnes' works blur the line between performance and ritual, using movement as a means for transcendence and connection.
Choreographer Carmen Carnes is the artistic director of Carmen Carnes Dance Ensemble. Carmen studied in the MFA program in the department of World Arts and Cultures/ Dance at UCLA and received her B.A. in dance from Mills College in 1995. She is extensively trained in modern/contemporary dance and ballet as well as Indian dance and music, Persian dance, Balinese dance, yoga, meditation, and rhythmic gymnastics. She currently performs with Odissi dance group (classical Indian dance) Odissi Vilas: Sacred Dance of India and has performed with Erica Essner Performance Co-op, Ballet Afsaneh, Eko Supriyanto, Erica Rebollar, Gamelan Sekar Jaya, and with renowned contemporary Persian dance group Namah Ensemble in Los Angeles.
