Yuri Zhukov began his dance studies as a student at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia. He then went on to dance professionally with the Kirov Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet, and The Birmingham Royal Ballet. Over the course of his career he performed lead roles in classical ballets such as Giselle, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, the Nutcracker and also in Balanchine’s Agon, Serenade, Symphony in C, The Four Temperaments and others.
Mr. Zhukov choreographed his first ballet for the San Francisco Ballet School in 1992. Since then he has created new works for companies such as 59 North - Touring Group of the Royal Swedish Ballet, The Royal Birmingham Ballet, The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, The English Dance Youth Company, Configurations Dance Company, American Repertory Ensemble and City Youth Ballet of San Francisco.
The impetus for the foundation of Zhukov Dance Theatre came as a response to the sold-out student shows and the increasing interest in Mr. Zhukov’s work. The dancers were selected from auditions in New York City and San Francisco, as well as from connections that Mr. Zhukov formed from his years working with companies in Europe and Sweden.
