Widely considered one of the most emphatically original and influential European choreographers working today, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker founded her dance troupe, Rosas, in 1983. With a sensibility born as much in New York as her native Belgium, De Keersmaeker has developed a rigorous and ingenious choreography in which form and structure create thrillingly visceral emotion onstage, gaining her critical acclaim and a passionate following both in Europe and the United States. De Keersmaeker has made a habit of working with composers of equal daring—Steve Reich, John Cage, and Thierry de Mey, among others—choreographing works where dance is not a mere representation of music but its exuberant usurpation. Now the resident choreographer and company of Théâtre de la Monnaie, Belgium’s national opera house, De Keersmaeker and Rosas are leaders of the country’s exceptionally rich dance scene.
